Mid summer brings the fireweed to Willow, Alaska. It also brings long summer days - some warm, some hot and some rainy. For sled dogs it brings work and play on glaciers, cool days in Skagway, Juneau or Seward or endless hours of play at home depending on what each kennel plans for their summers. Willow is a place where on any given fall evening driving north along the Parks Highway, a motorist is more likely to pass more huskies running down the trails along the side of the highway than cars on the highway. But in the summer it is much less apparent that Willow is a mecca for the sled dog community. But we are here...just nestled into summer play. While the dogs are working or playing this summer, WDMA is busy preparing for the next winter season. We are excited to be working on
our Junior Musher Races (slated for January 2020), Ladies 5 Dog/5 Mile Twilight Sled Dog Race (this year with a Junior Division as well), a Mushers and Mentors 20 mile Fun Run, Earl Norris 30/30 (taking place during the first weekend of Willow Winter Carnival 2020) and the 3rd Annual Willow 300 Sled Dog Race heading out in mass start fashion from Willow Lake on January 30, 2020. Our next regular Willow Dog Mushers Association Meeting is Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 7pm in the Willow Community Center - Mile 69 of the Parks Highway. Please stop in and join us!
